I believe that eternity exists in the heart of every person; God has placed it there. My influence in a child’s life affects their eternity, so therefore, I have no idea how far-reaching my effect is on each life. It’s humbling and sometimes daunting to think of how influential an educator is. This keeps me honing my knowledge base of content as well as Scripture, as I’ll be held accountable by God for all my interactions.

As a Spanish teacher, I am teaching students grammar and culture. But it is so much more important for them to also hear truths about God that will impact eternity. Students should learn language, but they also have eternal souls and their most important need is Jesus. Because of this, having a specifically Christian educational philosophy is vital to infuse the most important truths about God into my teaching.

From a Christian point of view, “educating for eternity” means understanding that education is not just about learning facts but also helping students grow spiritually. It involves teaching not only academic subjects but also values, kindness, and serving others. As christian teachers we are called to set good examples, aiming to make a positive impact on students’ lives and prepare them to live purposefully in this world and for eternity with God. The main goal of education is to equip students for both their life here on Earth and their life with God forever.

As a Christian educator, it is important to remember that we are not simply training students to be prepared to work and live successfully in this temporary world, but we are teaching them in the hopes that they will accept Christ and be prepared to rule and reign with Him in Eternity. The Scriptures admonish us to set out hearts and minds on this above (eternal). We should live and educate students with eternity in mind.

Educating our students for eternity means that it goes far beyond just teaching them for today, but to equip them to know Christ and to work toward the future of living with him one day as Christians.
