What does the lecturer mean when she says you are here to educate your students for eternity?

The lessons students learn in the classroom do not end in the classroom. They continue on for life for them. They will remember what you teach them and bring it with them through the rest of their lives. They may even pass the knowledge they obtained from you to their children. It is important to guide them correctly.

In working as a Christian educator, the biggest blessing within this role is the ability to share the Gospel with students. I appreciated that the lecturer touched on the reality that society is telling various demographics that they cannot succeed because of where they come from, the color of their skin, etc. However, this is a lie from the enemy. When the lecturer says, “…you are here to educate your students for eternity”, this means we have the opportunity to care for students’ souls. Yes, we can ensure they receive a quality education and have opportunities to go further with their education. However, it is within our bounds to plant seeds of the Gospel, trusting that the Lord will grow those seeds to further His Kingdom. We can teach them that the most important part of their identity is that it is rooted in Christ. We are not just educating the child we have before us, but we are, Lord willing, showing them what it means to be a Christ-follower.

I believe she meant that we are preparing the students to be on a lifelong journey as Christians. If we are teaching that they are all a creation of God and have an eternal soul, our job is to help prepare their eternal souls to the best of our ability.

Simply, that our students will not have eternal life without a belief in Jesus as their savior. So yes, it’s important that they do well in their classes. But helping them to process and understand their salvation is the MOST important thing we do.

It means to help students have an active faith life. By our fruits we demonstrate our faith, so that when we help them grow in faith, they can demonstrate active grace in their life. If we only focus on the needs of today, we neglect the more important matter of helping students serve the Kingdom of God.
