I grew up going to church almost every Sunday, which was helpful because I heard the gospel from an early age. One of the negative things, however, was that my family got in the habit of just going to the service and not really being involved in other ways. Therefore, there was a disconnect because I didn’t feel like I personally knew any of the people that attended church with us. My wife and I currently go to a large church where, while we still feel that temptation to just go in for the service and walk out, we have successfully plugged into a small group and some serving opportunities that have helped us get to know other people.

I have seen both positive and negative experiences. I have seen unhealthy, controlling, power-hungry pastors spew false doctrine, call people out in front of the congregation, mislead their congregation and more. I have also seen a church that goes out into the local communities to love and serve like Jesus, send missionaries abroad, create relationships, discuss hard topics in healthy ways, and more. The negatives can easily push someone away from the faith. The positive can help grow the hope we have in Christ and his Kingdom expanding on earth.

The church I grew up in had no focus on discipleship in the youth. This caused our family to move to a different church when I was a sophomore in HS. We love the church we are in now. It is a Bible preaching, discipleship focused church that loves the community well.

Understanding what it takes to get along with each other is a lesson that has to be learned and can be difficult at times.
