Because the biblical narrative is about how God revealed Himself to real people who lived in a certain place and age, understanding the geography can help us to understand the context of that message. In this case of shepherding in the Judean wilderness, the harsh terrain and climate makes us realize the perils that the flock face, and the dedication and courage that the good shepherd displays. We realize the helplessness of being leader-less and the selflessness of leadership.

Geography plays a significant role in truly understanding the biblical narrative. The terrain and climate of the places in the bible helps us to better appreciate their way of life and also have a better grasp of why certain events unfolded as they did. Certain biblical events were shaped directly by geography and climate. This is what the life of a person in bible times centered their life cycle around.

The geography of the Biblical land is integral to the purpose of God. His choice to use the wilderness helps us even today as we seek meaning in scripture and grow in our relationship with God. Although inhabitants of the wilderness are missing all the basic essentials of life, food, water, safety in this land, God provides. This is true for all of God’s children wherever they are.
