What is the difference between leadership and management?

Thinking of it as people, managers do a great job of telling you what to do. Leaders will get their hands dirty and show you, helping along the way.

Leadership is the process of taking people to a place where they are not. It leads them somewhere.
Management makes sure you are doing something. Not concerning if you are getting somewhere or going somewhere. -
Leadership is supposed to take us somewhere we haven’t been. Management is there to assist us while we are at those places we haven’t been.

Far too many times I observe people given orders with no leadership experience. As a retired Navy person, I experienced people who recieved a promotion , but didn’t embody any leadership qualities. This was a disaster waiting to happen. In order to lead effectivly you must be willing to go first in the direction you’re sending others.
