In this sense, they can fill in for literal statements that may need the assistance of figures of speech to keep our interest and seal in our minds and memories the point being made. This is true for this form of language in the Bible as well as other sources. But figures should never be pressed for a greater significance or permanence that, by their nature, they do not have.
