The foundation of Jesus Christ’s claim to be God is clearly evident in the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. However, the best definition is beautifully articulated about Jesus in the opening chapter of John. “The Word was with God,” indicating that the Word itself came forth from the mouth of God. This pivotal point highlights that the Word became Flesh, entering humanity as Jesus. Jesus often emphasized that seeing him is akin to seeing the Heavenly Father, as he is the Word spoken by the Heavenly Father.

Jesus’s claim to be God is the whole point of the bible, for the scriptures that point to Him in old Testament, to the gospels declaring His life and fulfillment of the prophesies proclaimed of Him, to the letters written giving deeper understanding to us who have not personally seen Jesus. Without His claim, we have nothing, and the world is still in sin and lost from a Holy God.

Jesus is part of the Trinity, God in three persons–Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. He was fully God and fully Man.

It affirms His deity, and therefore His authority to forgive sins.
