    Luther’s understanding of “civic righteousness” He had a high view of of human possibilities apart from the gospel, apart from faith. He believed that pagans could be what he called “civically righteous”. Be able to practices a kind of civil righteousness that indeed could make a society better rather than worse. He believed also that civically righteous people were missing the best part of humanity, which is fearing, loving , and trusting God above all things. Luther’s main concern was about disruption of the love of God and the response of trust. He was concerned about the loss of faith in God, which for him was the the key practice of our whole humanity.

    The Human Creature Apart from God Still capable of Civic Righteousness

    a. This is only external compliance with God’s law.

    b. This preserves the good society so important.

    c. Sin corrupting humanity.

    d. First type of righteousness is alien or external righteousness , of another instilled from without.
