Many of my students go on mission trips with their respective churches. As a school, we have annual service projects. Some of my students have been more impacted than others. Some students view mission trips as a time to socialize with their friends, while others become more invested in supporting the community. Mission work where students are exposed to poverty and difficult living situations is impactful because it allows them to realize their privilege and better love others.

At my school we are required/encouraged to have one of our ‘fieldtrips’ be a serviced based trip or project. Last year my course made cold weather packs for homeless in our area. each team was assigned items to bring in for their pack and then were able to personalize the bags. Many if not all of the teams wrote either how God loves the individual that would receive the bag or scripture too! They are amazing little humans! It showed my students how they individually and as a community could make a difference to their community through even a small act. Also how every opportunity can lead someone to Christ.

Our school dedicates a day in the spring time to completing service projects. My homeroom course collected items to be included in “blessing bags” that will be handed out to homeless individuals through an organization located in a neighboring city. We took the items to the organization and filled the bags for the organization to hand out at a later date. As bags were filled, we talked with one of the women about the various ways the organization helps those in need in our area. The girls in my homeroom were impacted by realizing the little ways we can serve those around us in our community, and how it can come in various ways.

There is a family of a World War II veteran that our Student Council ministers to every fall and spring by cleaning up the property surrounding the home. This allows the student body the chance to take half a day and bless an elderly woman, ensuring she is not forgotten, is till loved and that she and her family matter. The students have taken such ownership of the project that they schedule and complete the clean up without teacher direction.

My 5th graders collected money and bought flowers. We potted them and wrote notes to the businesses and community help agencies near the school. We walked to these places and delivered the flowers and notes saying that we appreciate them and are praying for them.
We also collected items for the homeless and made care packages for them. These projects were different, but each served a purpose. The first is that we are a part of a community and each of us has a role to play. We need each other and should appreciate the way that others serve the community. The care packages were a reminder that many people are in a bad situation and need help. They appreciate even basic things that we take for granted.
