The school offers missions trips to our students in high school, and I recently was able to attend one with the freshman. Though we didn’t go far, we went to a “rural” area that basically is set up as if you were indeed in an area where you make your own food from the plants and animals available on your farm. The coolest part was that the students had to “unplug” from their phones and really work and connect on a deeper level than they ever have before. This made them realize to one be grateful for what they have at home, and also taught them that they can survive off communicating with others without a phone.

Our students have a service day where we go out into the community to do a bunch of different service projects. Some of them involve serving children while others involve manual labor. We do this on the school’s anniversary every year.

At Christmas time, my students packed boxes with gifts to take to students at a school in the northeast of Thailand. Earlier this year, my students helped the kindergarten kids with clean up.

WE had a kindness challenge where our students were supposed to think of something kind to do for someone else, and then we came back to course after that and shared how we had shown kindness. It wasn’t a mission trip per se, but it was going out with a mission to be a blessing to someone. It was great hearing their stories after.

We raised funds to support families whose community was devasted by wildfire. Our involvement generated discussions about the importance of gratitude for the things we had and temporal vs eternal things.
