What kind of mission work have your students been involved in? How have you seen it impact them?

Our seniors usually travel outside the US to experience missions in a different culture. It has impacted the students greatly and has challenged them in their walk with Christ by opening their eyes to the world around them. I hope our school continues to focus on this very important opportunity.

Since the rise of Covid, our school has been active with the local nursing home. For a long time, the residents could not have visitors. We would send them hand-made cards from students and gift baskets, but we also arranged times to go and sing for the residents. Our students and staff stood outside and the facility cracked their windows so the residents could hear us. We sang hymns and songs of praise. It was wonderful to worship together. It brought smiles to the residents’ faces, as well as the students’. Some of my students even asked when we could go back because they enjoyed it so much.

I’ve had students involved with the local food bank. We’ve also done school-wide fundraisers. I think it’s important to find a project or projects where the students see a need and are able to really make a difference. I think it would change their whole attitude about community service.

Honestly I wish our school did more actual work in the community. We do a good drive, shoe boxes, and do a missions week but I think it’s hard for the students to actually see how what they are doing is impacting others.
