Around Thanksgivings, the students have a homeroom competition where they collect food for the local Christian food bank. The students are surprised at the end at how much food they collected. It impacts them because they can see that giving a little but working as a school community leads to giving a lot. It dhows them that they can impact others lives in a positive way.

Our school has gathered food for different ministries, collected socks, clothing, toiletries. All of these have been small things, but easier for children in second grade to grasp and understand. They’ve been excited to feel like they are helping others.

Last year was the first year teaching in a private school and with Covid the school figured out a plan that we could fulfill staying within the restrictions. We supported a children’s home and created a birthday box with all the birthday supplies to give that child the themed party they can celebrate and remember.

I’ve seen little ‘mission’ work but service oriented work instead. I think it gives them the opportunity to think of others and not just themselves. So, they see that there are opportunities all around them (us) where we can help others.
