What kind of mission work have your students been involved in? How have you seen it impact them?

Every year we do the Operation Christmas Child and it is so neat to see the kids get excited to turn in their shoe boxes full of things they picked out for kids in need. Also, we do a few fundraisers for the USMC and I love seeing them support our military and the willingness to do so.

One year, my fourth graders were involved in a service learning project with a food pantry. It helped them to have empathy for others and openly care about others.

At my school our students have 4 serve days a year, where they go out and serve in the community. They clean up communities, go to soup kitchens, Salvation Army, food banks and assisted living facilities. Our students also have other community time they are expected to volunteer for. I have seen students that seem intitled turned humble and less fortunate students seem to feel more blessed.

My students have participated in child care for other classes, worked with disadvantaged women and children, and been involved in overseas missions. Most of my learners are, like me, growing in compassion and love for our community.

Students at my school participate in Serve Day annually. The middle schoolers stay at the building, with inside or outside projects, while the older students travel to other sites to address various community needs. The younger groups seems to enjoy the camaraderie of working together to spruce up their surroundings. I can imagine that the older students receive much appreciation from the outside groups where they serve.
