What obstacle do you struggle with when it comes to prayer? What helps you overcome that obstacle?

Being distracted by busyness is an obstacle in my prayer life. I sometimes feel I may have too many things on my plate to do. Even good things can be an enemy of great things, because they steal away the time.

I aim to pray and spend time with God before I do anything else in the morning. But sometimes I’m tempted to check Whatsapp, open an email etc. Then I get caught up in wordly things and feel that I’ve let God down or that my faith isn’t sincere. This, in turn, can lead to me coming to God with less confidence.

Looking back in my life, the biggest obstacles to faith and to prayer have been discouragement from “unanswered prayers” and disappointments. In retrospect, many of these things are a result of a worldly belief that prayer is something you ‘do’ to ’cause’ something to happen. Most cases this has been in troubled times when my heart has been in pain, saying: “Just make that pain stop, do something about it!” Essentially, approaching prayer as if it was a tactic to cause something to happen.
Some of the biggest answers to my prayers have come naturally and freely, and were not “caused” but were “given”. My mind still marvels at this, and my engineers mind is unable to wrap itself around that. Thank you Jesus!
