I teach kids with learning disabilities so it is really hard for them to think and learn on a deeper level, but I try to have them do a lot of extra practice and work to solve other problems that may relate to real life.

I used to volunteer in the children’s ministry and other places in the church. Then Covid. My grandchildren and great grandchildren. We paint on canvas. Or paint jars and put bible verses. They use the jars as pencil holders. I bought them devotionals and a treasure box each. They will call me and tell me about a devotional they liked or call just to ask a question. It is cool. My younger grandchildren and great grandchildren when they visit will talk about Jesus. Or they will make a fort under my desk. I will overhear them talking about Jesus. But when I would volunteer at church. They have magnets with bible verses. A bible verse each week to memorize. Stories of the bible that are spoken in church. They get to take the story home with them.

I use small group discussion to help facilitate conversations about important concepts. I also use Socratic Seminar, which really is a big hit with the students as they enjoy analyzing and debating topics with their fellow classmates. It allows their voices to be heard, encouraged, and challenged. I have great feedback from those seminars.

To help students explore concepts a little deeper, I tend to use discussions, illustrations, and hands-on applications. I believe that encouraging students to explore concepts/topics using different methods helps students not only better understand the material, but also helps them to discover the interconnectedness of each concept as we progress throughout the course.

I ask students a lot of deeper questions as we learn new concepts in course and always try to ask them what God’s purpose or plan for that concept might be according to them. I love hearing their ideas, stories, etc and seeing them digest what we are discussing on a deeper level. I make it a habit to search through God’s Word together with them, after these discussions, to make sure what they conclude is in line with God’s Word.
