What practices do you currently use in your classroom to help your students learn concepts on a deeper level? Do you feel these are effective? Why or why not?

I haven’t had the opportunity to apply biblical concepts in my classroom yet, as this will be the first classroom of my own. I am thankful that I will be in a Christian setting, as my student teaching experience in the public school didn’t allow for any mention or reference to God. I plan to take everything I’m learning in this course to help me be effective in my delivery in the classroom.

To help student’s learn on a deeper level, I incorporate media, articles, discussions, and hands-on activities. I believe they are effective, but not to all of the students. I try to reach every students, but some just want the facts to pass the test.

I aim to teach students the “why” behind mathematical procedures rather than just the steps. I ask open-ended questions when introducing a new concept and use the questions to help guide students towards the correct answer and procedures rather than just giving it to them outright. Once the topic or procedure is laid out, I will try explaining it in different ways in order to help solidify and further students’ understanding. I believe these are effective practices because students have to think and problem solve for themselves rather than mindlessly memorizing formulas and procedures in order to ace a test.

Asking questions always brings the teacher to a knowledge of where the students are. I ask questions to see if my students can even relate a topic to biblical thinking.

It is important to relate the lessons to what they experience in their lives. I often relate the lessons to things they see everyday and tie it into what we are learning so there is a reason to retain the material beyond taking the test. Sometimes they will remember the stories and not know the names of the concepts but they understand them and know how to use them, so that is what is important when the lesson becomes part of your understanding of life, you are reaching that deeper level.
