Honestly I don’t currently use any practices, but I am encouraged to bring this into my classroom. I want to work towards having my students reflect on a Bible verse or even their faith in a piece of art work. As an art teacher, I want to give my students new ways to learn concepts on a deeper level, because I believe putting your thoughts and beliefs into an art piece forces to you to truly learn.

I do a lot of cooperative group lessons to promote group discussions and problems solving strategies.

Discussing scriptures and what it means to them. I teach lower elementary.

My current teaching practice includes a lot of metacognitive work. Increasingly, I am using the arts to support students in understanding biblical truths. For example, furniture restoration teaches about God’s redemptive work, reflecting on the rescue of a piece, its redemption, and the restoration process. The move to include the work of daily life as a means for communicating biblical truths has provided students with more opportunities to have their aha moments (seeing that the Word is true instead of only being told that it is). I am also becoming more aware of the role of everyday structures in society in supporting the Christ-centered education of my students.

Learning on a deeper level for students can begin when the concept is applied to their own lives or interests. I think more of students who are struggling because of their placement in detention centers, a juvenile justice system. In this situation they are willing to hear “deep” truth from God’s Word. They need it and respond to it readily.
