Which of Dr. MacCullough’s guiding questions discussed in this lesson stood out to you and why?

I like her approach in general. I’ve also been reading the book MacCullough recommends by James Sire. Thinking of curriculum development in terms of guiding questions like “What is real?” and “What are human beings”? is appealing to me. These are the kinds of questions that come up in studying literature, but I’ve thought of them more in terms of understanding individual authors and developments in literature, rather than essential questions to provide a foundation for the entire curriculum. I like the idea of using her eight guiding questions to build the entire curriculum.

What happens to a person at death?
Death, and the grief associated with it, can seem to be a part of fallen life on this earth, yet until today, I hadn’t considered how my response to death and my beliefs about it, influence my teaching. As I consider it today, I begin to see a glimmer of influence within many aspects of teaching values and the importance of human beings, both those within the classroom and those around the world. Believing in life after death coupled with the value of each human being changes how I think, and would present, any number of educational topics because I believe life does not end at death. While I did not consider my ideas and beliefs about life after death as foundational to my worldview, I recognize the need to incorporate these thoughts into my biblically integrated lesson plans.

I think there were two big ones: What is prime reality or foundational reality? and What is a human being? They are both important because the answers really lie inside the Bible. Now some may argue, as Dr. Black cited in an earlier lesson, that well the Bible was written for this time period and is not relevant to today. Well, the Bible used imagery common for the period it was written, but certainly relevant to today. We find this especially in the Book of Revelation. By the same token, a human being is described in Genesis. Students will likely have to be prepared to show and know what the Bible says about each of these aspects and its relevancy to their world today. Challenging for sure, but needs to be studied in order to give an answer to anyone who asks why one believes in Jesus.

When should life end? I had never thought about that before but the way our society is shifting, I’m sure that question is becoming a big one.

What is prime reality? I feel so many questions that were listed can be honestly answered by this question. If we are secure in our foundation, other things will more easily fall into place.
