Although two of the letters to the churches in Revelation addressed the challenge of lukewarmness and losing the first love of Christ and appealing to the lesser Christian concerns, I never thought about this as being as great of a challenge as heretical teachings. But I was wondering why in the area which I live, which is North America, why there is little deep seeking to know scripture and deep desire to meet as a body for prayer. I think that this challenge came more into focus to me, as we in North America have great freedom to worship and proclaim Jesus, yet we have become complacent and lukewarm; no longer with an urgency to seek and know Jesus and His word.

One of the most surprising challenges described in the lesson is the extent of persecution faced by Christians, particularly how it often leads to growth and resilience. This is especially relevant in places like China and Nigeria. In China, Christians face government restrictions and surveillance, which can create pressure to conform to societal norms. Despite this, many believers find strength in their faith, often leading to vibrant underground movements.

In Nigeria, the Church faces intense persecution from extremist groups, which has resulted in a strong sense of community among believers. This mirrors the historical challenges of the early church, where adversity often spurred growth.

Both scenarios highlight how, despite opposition, faith communities can adapt and thrive, reflecting the enduring resilience of the church throughout history.

None of the challenges surpise me. People have free will and deviate from what they know to true and justify it.

These challenges are not surprising. I began listing all the groups I have been exposed to, many various denominations, including parachurch groups like Campus Crusade and the Navigators , also organizations such as Wycliffe Bible Translators, World Vision, etc. A vast mix of views and practices. But I have also observed a unity that can happen when individuals work together for a common goal as in Samaritan’s Purse, when we take our eyes off self and our differences and instead reach into the needs of those around us with the purpose of helping those in crisis. Could this be why Father God allows so much tribulation? Serving together builds unity and diminishes all the factions.

The fact that the church grows during times of persecution is not a new thing for me, but a reminder that when life is ways, we may get complacent. I have faced this kind of apathy is my own life’s journey.
