Do you find exegesis and hermeneutics to be equally challenging tasks or is one easier than the other? If one is easier, which one is it? Why do you think that’s the case?

I agree the exegesis approach to understanding a passage takes time to further interpret the “backstory” (who, what, where…) that has to be evaluated in order to understand the context of the passage. Yet once the context is understood it may be easier to apply to ones life in todays world. Some passages are easier than others, (i.e. Proverbs) as they are a simple command or fact that can be easily interpreted.

Exegesis seems like it would be difficult and time consuming. It’s not as easy as just reading a passage of Scripture and them applying it (Hermeneutics), it takes time to dig through the original meaning and “transport” yourself into the time period and understand the cultural norms of the day.
Maybe too, becasue I grew up reading the Scripture and paid little attenion to the exegetical side of things and focused more on what that passage of Scripture means to me and how I should apply it to my life.

The first part of exegesis can be difficult for me because we often read a passage of scripture and immediately think of ourselves. The second part is finding someone and asking for their opinion, which is also quite a limitation. Because of the generality of their understanding and their own opinions.

The exegesis is easier because interpreting what the writer conveyed from my perspective inhibits their reality. Relating the message to my life today is far easier once I understand the full meaning of the original text.
