Do you find exegesis and hermeneutics to be equally challenging tasks or is one easier than the other? If one is easier, which one is it? Why do you think that’s the case? - Discussion Forum - Artos Academy (BETA)

I believe that hermeneutics is the most challenging, because it has the most margin for error. When dealing with exegesis we are looking for cold hard facts, hermeneutics is often a spirit leading time of personal application.

I think they are equally difficult. It can be difficult to dig into all of the original contexts, but it can also be difficult to bring that meaning forward to a time that seems very different.

I believe that Exegesis can be a bit more challenging of a task. In order to complete the task you must read the entire text and not just the verse or verese you are studying in order to properly identify the original message. You must also to an historical study to understand what was going on during the time of the original message. If not careful in this stage one could make the mistake of eisegesis and totally miss the meaning. If misinterpretation happens in this step the hermenuetics will be off as well.

To me it really depends on the passage that I am interpreting. Some passages are easy to under how it applied in the writer’s time period and hard to tell how it applies to our modern day lives. Some passages are hard for me to understand how it fit into the writer’s time period but easy to understand how it applies to the present day. Then there are passages that are hard both ways and some that are easy in both ways.

I think exegesis will be easier to do because you are just taking the facts out of the scripture whereas when you do hermeneutics you have to find an application for the facts and there may not always be an application and sometimes there may be more than one application
