Why are people drawn to the book of Revelation and confused by it? What might be the value in studying it?

People are drawn to Revelation because of its incredible and fantastic symbols and prophecies, as well as the fact that it has to do with the end of all things, which is something people are obviously curious about. It is confusing for the same reasons. The writing style uses a lot of symbols and metaphors to convey truths about God’s victory at the end of time and our dwelling with him for eternity. It is valuable to study because it gives us hope and confidence in the promises of God, in His triumph over sin, death, evil, and Satan, and in the centrality of Jesus Christ in God’s redemptive plan. The hopeful future that Revelation paints for people who believe in Christ gives us the power and ability to endure trials and persecution in our earthly lives. One of the main reasons John wrote Revelation was to help Christians who were experiencing persecution and suffering.

People want answers to the unknown like the end of time and death and to know their own future. Revelation provides this and more. It is mysterious because it is a vision, written prophecy, and uses lots of figurative language. This text cannot be interpreted through a natural lens or be taken entirely literally. It will not make sense to an unsaved person for sure. Revelation gives Christians hope that we (good) triumph in the end over (evil). It assures believers of their place on heaven with Christ.

Humans have a desire to be like God and to know right from wrong (Garden of Eden) and to know the future. We do not like not knowing. So we can either go to sorcerers, palm readers, tarot card readers, ouija boards, and psychics for knowledge from the demons or we can study the Bible for answers about what is to come. Going to God for answers is the better (only) option.

As is the case with all of the Bible there is value in studying Revelation. Even though it uses odd writing and is often difficult to understand exactly what it is saying, we can understand that God deserves to be worshipped and that he has already overcome the world.
