We are drawn to Revelation just as we are drawn to read the last few pages of a good mystery novel…we want to see how it ends. We want to see good finish off evil forever. We are drawn to hope.

I believe people are drawn to Revelation because it’s the culmination of the grand story of the Bible. People want to know how everything ends and what’s ahead. They are confused because of the way it is written figurative apocalyptic style with so many symbols and references to the Old Testament. We can learn from the letters that were written to the seven churches on how to live out the Christian faith. We can also increase our worship and honor Jesus for being the only one that could open the scroll. We also can learn more about the new Heaven and earth coming.

I think many people are drawn to read Revelation because of the unveiling of the end times that it offers. However, I also think that many people become confused by it because they do not read it in the context of the whole Biblical narrative and because it is so packed full of imagery and fantasy-esque depictions of things (i.e. dragons, soldiers on white horses, mythical sounding creatures, etc) that can feel confusing to people grounded in the natural world. It’s value, however, lies in it’s ability to reveal the beauty of Jesus and what is life, death, and resurrection accomplished for us and how His second coming will restore all things and make all things new.
