Satan attempted to overthrow God. He wanted to be worshiped like God. As a result, he was cast out of heaven. Since he sinned and was no longer welcome to abide with God in heaven, he does not want anyone else to have that privilege either. He therefore tempts mankind to follow him and sin, thus being separated from God because no sin can be in heaven. This is why he attacks believers as well…to keep them out of heaven. He knows that only the blood of Jesus Christ can cover our sins and grant us access to heaven if we repent and believe. Satan does not want believers spreading the Gospel and leading others to Christ, so he tries everything he can think of to interfere with our being a witness. He can do this since he is the ruler of this realm.

Satan wanted to be worshipped as if he was God. He used a serpent in his scheme to mislead the first man, Adam. He, Adam, woman, and the serpent was all condemned to death for disobedience.

Pride and vanity allowed Satan to see himself as equal to or even superior to God. He rebelled against God thinking that he did not need God and foresaking the fact that God is sovereign over all. Knowing that he will spend the rest of eternity away from all of the good that cannot exist without God’s presence, he is determined to take his revenge by preventing as many as possible from finding salvation through Christ.

The Bible doesn’t explicitly say what the devil did, but he deceived himself and wanted to be worshipped as YHWH. He committed many acts of rebellion that resulted in his being cast out of heaven, and the angels who followed in his ways and were deceived were also cast out.
