Satan became a fallen angel, because he was full pride and basically thought he could out do God.

Lucifer became the fallen angel Satan, when he, though blessed by God with great power and position, became proud and wanted to be God. He led approximately one-third of the angels into rebellion against God.
This explains why we sense opposing forces, whether covert or overt, in our quest to live as Christians. We are tempted by the suggestions and lies sown by Satan. Sometimes we even see uncanny manifestations of this spiritual world, such as false miracles and demon possession. -
It was his pride that got to him. He said “I will be like the Most High”. He fell like a lightning bolt. He has been allowed by God to reign in this fallen world for a short time, but will be cast into the Lake of Fire.

Satan wanted to be god. He wanted his way, and not God. An ever present reminder to me to not become my own god.
