Because then the focus is on us and not on God. We do not want praise for fasting, we are doing it to build a deeper connection with God.

Jesus wants us to have the right motives when fasting. Some may fast to get attention.

I think Jesus indicated that we fast in private because it is not something to be done for self glorification.

When you fast in secret, you are rewarded by your Father in Heaven, not by someone or something here on earth.

So we don’t fall into that trap of doing it for the wrong reasons.
