Why do you think Jesus indicated that we shouldn’t “broadcast” when we are fasting to others?

Because our intentions should be focused on our relationship with God.

He indicated that such “broadcasting” was the behavior of hypyocrites — actors — intimating that truly seeking communion with God when fasting, and praying yields true spiritual rewards: “…You desire truth in the inward parts, and in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom” (Psalm 51:6).

Nothing in our faith should be s reflection on us. We are not here in this world to gain favor for ourselves from others. Instead, we are to bring the glory to God.

Fasting is about us and God only. It is not to boast or tell others how spiritual we are. Involving others causes us to lose focus on why we are fasting and serves no good purpose.

I think it’s important because if you let others know you’re fasting, it will seem as if you’re doing it just for show, to say “look at me, I’m fasting”, it wouldn’t be doing it for the right reasons.
