Without discipleship, whether education or not, there is no growth.

It is essential that we disciple students to be Christ-followers who know how to minister to their peers, and lead peers and younger students. It is also essential that we are discipling students in how to use all of the subjects that they are learning as a way to be Kingdom builders and to effectively minister to not only peers but those they will meet throughout their lives.

Discipleship is an essential part of Christianity – it is what all believers have been called to do. That said, Christian classrooms and schools offer a setting that is prime for making disciples. It is part of equipping students for what’s next in the world for all who claim to be Jesus-followers.

Without teaching, encouraging and developing our students in discipleship, we are ignoring that their future purpose is the same as ours.

Discipleship is essential because as was mentioned in the lecture, we are training students to be IN the world and not OF the world. Our biblical worldview directly ties into how we present ourselves in our communities, churches, schools – whatever school we may be in and in our own families. People will have differing perspectives about how people ought to be treated, how equality plays out… I remember reading one time on a wall in a classroom that: “Equality is not every student getting the same thing. Equality is every student getting what they need as an individual.” the lecturer mentioned how there is no more trying out for recreation leagues or even in some cases school teams. Everyone gets a trophy and no one feels their personal contribution or worth toward an end. As we disciple children, we are teaching them that no matter how young or old, they have some gift or talent or experience to contribute to the greater good of their course, family, society or the world that will make an impact for the kingdom of God. Their reward doesn’t always lie here on earth, though they or we may see some of the fruit of our labor sometimes. Our reward lies in heaven.
