Jesus tells us in Matthew 28:19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.” We should want to do this as Christians, but even more-so because Jesus commanded it. It is essential to train up disciples because we are preparing them for the real world, and we have a responsibility to teach them who they are in Christ and what their role is in the world. By discipling both their hearts and minds, we are setting them up to be able to tackle and achieve many things in life from a perspective rooted in biblical wisdom.

Discipleship is important in Christian education because we were told to go forth and spread the Gospel. We need to teach our students to think of others and to be aware of how they are portraying themselves. It is important to share the good news and let others know of what is possible through Christ.

I believe discipleship is very essential. As an educator we have an opportunity to lead by example. We can model to our students how to LIVE OUR FAITH OUT LOUD. By incorporating discipleship in our classroom, we’re leading by example that Serving is an act of worship. Service for a Christian is a blessing, not only for the receiver but for the giver/doer as well.
We can serve each other, our school, our community, our city/town, and extend out from there.

Discipleship is essential to Christian education because it is the action part of what we teach our students. Being doers of the word is what comes to mind when I think about discipleship as part of how we educate students. It would be the more hands on part of what we may have taught them academically in course. Learning to care for others in small and large ways is application to our teaching. We don’t even need to leave the classroom to learn to minister to one another. If we are faithful to include discipleship, I think we will have far fewer students who leave our schools and churches and don’t continue walking with the Lord. Discipleship is what changes people’s lives. I appreciated the example about plants slowly being acclimated from a greenhouse to the world in which they must grow. We slowly work on discipleship, taking every opportunity we can, and then our students will be prepared for the world we send them into.

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations” -Matthew 28:19. When I was in college, I was approached by a Christian organization and they focused on making Christian disciples. They were very persuasive, yet required extensive conformity and enforced other rules that truly frightened me. However, their focus on discipleship was inspiring, and I believe that helping each other be more Christ-like is one of the key elements of a Christian education.
