By definition, isn’t discipleship learning from and following Jesus Christ? Education in a Christian school or church is a part of the process of knowing Christ, making him known to others, and doing the work he has called us to do.

Students need experience in discipleship in order to look beyond their own needs and help others (as Christ calls us to do). They can discover the joy that comes with service. In addition, discipleship takes students beyond their own “greenhouse” and exposes them to the very world where they must find their own way after graduation. They can see first-hand how they can be in the world but not of the world.

Discipleship is essential in Christian education because we as Christians are called to train up those in the way they should go. We are disciples to these students each and every day. Our classroom is our mission field.

Discipleship is an essential part of Christian education because we must teach discipleship because we are trying to show the kids how to be disciples of Christ.

God’s word says to go into all the world and preach the gospel, as well as to make disciples of all men/nations. Not only are we to tell students the Good News of Jesus Christ, we are to raise them in the nurture and admonition of the Lord to help them to become true followers of Christ, with good doctrine, so that they too may lead others to Him and model what true discipleship looks like. As a Christian and an educator, this should be a vital part of who I am, both while teaching and in my daily life.
