Discipleship is the mandate of Christ for every believer. We are to raise our children in the fear of the LORD so they may live lives worthy of their calling. Parents play the primary role, yet we are instrumental members of their village. The Christian educator is one team member on a community committed to seeing God’s purposes fulfilled in the life of a child.

Discipleship, as part of a Christian education, will create children and adults that know how to act as the hands and feet of God. They will learn how to minister to others and be “in” this world and not “of” this world.

Yes, this is what we are instructed to do, Matt. 28:18-20. As a teacher this is why I choose teaching. It is the opportunity to put this into practice. I do not get this opportunity with adults. When I was growing up we expected that some older person would take us under their wind and teach us a trade or some of their life’s lesson. Now I do not see this occuring. It is a new generation. My one daughter seems to understand this and she asks many questions about many things. Of 6 children she has been the only one to do so.

Without discipleship, students are not being trained or taught to be disciples of Christ.

Discipleship is the continuing education factor for Christ-followers. Hands-on learning sticks with a person because of the interaction with others, and is a part of fulfilling Christ’s command to us. The 4-h slogan comes to mind, ” learn by doing.”
