As Christian educators our main purpose is to help families fulfill their God-given role- to raise children up in the ways of the Lord. This can only be achieved when we have a strong philosophy of Christian Education and a deep understanding and love of God’s Word in our own lives.

If we want to pass down our knowledge of God to the next generation, then we need to know exactly what it is that we believe. We need to know our Bibles and what God’s words mean to us personally, if we are going to pass this along to our students. If we do not have a heart for God ourselves, our students will see right through us. How can we truly love our students if we first do not fully commit to our understanding of God’s love for us.

I believe that it is important for myself to have a strong philosophy in Christian education, so that my foundation is solid in Christ. So that I can defend the way I am teaching to every child and parent and grandparent that I come in contact with.

Without a proper Christian philosophy of education, the education provided will only be “private” not Christian. In today’s society, it is critical that we as Christian educators know not only what we believe but also why we believe. We cannot equip or educate our students if we have not first obtained the knowledge for ourselves.

As Dr. Black noted, “How can I love philosophy if I don’t even acknowledge God in the whole equation of philosophy?” If one of the primary goals of an education is to cultivate wisdom in our students, then it is imperative that we begin with the understanding that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”
