There are so many ideas in the world that are counter to the Bible, it is important to know how to find them and how to refute them. When the students are in the world and their views are challenged, they need to know how to defend them.

Why is it important that we teach our students strategies for discernment?
I remember as a young woman reading the Bible and wondering why women did not cover their heads. I asked a lady who mentored me and her response was something like, well if you want to be legalistic, you can. I was shocked because I want to obey God and His word, and I know that she did too. But that passage did not make sense to me. I want to be able to engage with my students on questions that they have–whether they are questions about Scripture or relating other topics to biblical truth. Students need to learn ways of answering these hard questions for themselves. -
I believe it’s important that we teach our students strategies for discernment. Ephesians 4 teaches that we shouldn’t be children tossed back and forth and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of people, by cleverness in deceitful schemes. Having strategies for discernment will create spiritually strong youth, who are stable with firm footing in their faith.

Students will not always have Christian teachers. Even though I am a Christian, I may say something wrong during a lesson. Students must listen for truth and hold it up to the Bible for verification. Otherwise, they are susceptible to false teachings.

I think the reason it is important to teach strategies for discernment to students is to prepare them for the real world. The lecturer said that the reason teens were walking away from God was because they had never talked about tough issues in life. I think if we make our lessons Biblically integrated, that it will give students the foundation that they need in life.
