Why is it important that we teach our students strategies for discernment?

It is important that we teach out students strategies for discernment because this is equiping them for their future. There is an oft-quoted saying, “Give a man a fish and you have fed him for a day; teach him how to fish and you have fed him for a lifetime.” I am reminded of this saying in that we must prepare our students for their lifetimes, and it should include strategies for discernment. They will be exposed to a lot of information, some claiming to be factual rather than theory, and our students need to be equipped to discern God’s hand in all of it. Social media will try to tell people how they should think, and ridicule those who do not think their way; we need to prepare our students for this.

I want my students to be confident in God’s word.

It is important so they are able to find and know God’s truth in the world we are in today.

It is important because they are going to be told and exposed to many different ideas, thoughts, and ideologies and if they are not taught how to discern the truth, they will end up believing anything they read, watch, or hear.

We want students to use the Bible as their truth and be able to discern what is right and wrong based upon those truths.
