Students must not only know what Christian beliefs are, but also why they believe it. They must believe with their heart and with their mind so that they are not swayed by “every wind of doctrine”.

This is an area I look back on and regret not teaching my older children how to do. I want to truly incorporate this in my future classroom as I prepare for my first position. I want my students to be able to look at the information they receive from the world around them and know how to filter it through the lens of a biblical worldview. I have started working on this with my 16 year old son and my 11 year old daughter and hope that I can instill in them the skills they need to be able to understand the God-Why’s and the difference between what the world is saying and what God says in His Word. I also want this for each and every student that comes through my classroom. I want them to be critical thinkers and not just, as my brother puts it, “sheeple.”

Our students need to know how to discern so they can make wise decisions according to God’s word and understand why they are making those decisions-to glorify God and show love to others.

Students will be faced with many areas that challenge Christian beliefs. This may be when they go to college but most likely soon before then. It is important to have an answer for some of these challenges.

So often, and even in my own childhood experience, we are taught the Bible but in a way of “we don’t do this because the Bible says so” or “don’t do this because I said so” and no explanation goes into teaching and explaining what the Bible is really saying. This has done me a disservice. Students need to think for themselves and determine the “why” and have Scripture to back them up.
