We need to support parents because they are the first and most important teacher in their child’s life. We should be partnering along side them to educate their child.

Parents are responsible and accountable for raising their children, not educators. That said, as Christian teachers, we should have the goal of partnering with parents in shepherding students to become the people He has created them to be. Supporting, not undermining parents is an important component in fulfilling OUR roles as educators, and not usurping THEIR roles as parents.

It is important to support parents so they can see that you care not just for their kids, but for the whole family as a unit.

As educators, we are working together as a team with parents. Parents are the primary educators of children. It is our responsibility to come along side parents and hear their perspectives, be available to answer questions and support parents as much as possible in the bringing up of their children. Most of the time, we are partnering with parents who are Christians and share the same worldview. However, there are times children are in our classrooms because their parents simply do not want a public education but they may not be believers and still send their children to Christian school for a different type of education. It is here where partnering with parents can be vital as we live our example through our teaching and the way we approach parents’ needs. For Christian families, they often feel uplifted and supported when they can share concerns and joys with a like-minded person. Christian parents know the value of sharing in the raising up of a generation and know the importance of showing their children that there are others who share their faith. Education is more than just subject matter content. Education of the whole child takes into account spiritual, emotional, physical, educational and personal needs, understanding and nurturing those needs and teaching in a way that best suits the child. No one knows the child better than their own parents. Gaining their trust and working together with them is a valuable relationship and one that is often long-lasting.

It is my role as a Christian educator to support parents in training up their child. Ultimately, the Bible commands parents to train a child therefore we are mere support staff in a reiforcement role
