Christian Learning Center Forums Discussion Forum Why is it so important to connect with others when you’re grieving the loss of a loved one? If you’ve grieved this kind of loss in the past, what kind of support was most helpful to you? If you’re currently grieving this kind of loss, who specifically can you reach out to for support?

Connecting with the right persons helps you receive empathy from one who really tries to understand and not judge. It may help you receive perspective as you slowly become to feel that the grief is deep but not overwhelming; the loss is great but not insurmountable.

I have grieved the loss of my father, to whom I was caregiver. But I think the process was not overwhelming, because I had spent time with him when he stayed in my house instead of hospital, because I have a faith in God, and because I believe he is also in the Lord.

People who know how to be supportive is a very rare and valuable thing. When you are suffering through grief, you can advance through one negative emotion to the next, and many more afterwards. But when you have people around you that can see and feel such changes in a grieving person and knows how to talk to that person and hold that person past the pain and the misery, that’s having a valuable blessing at your side. My child is that person for me.

I believe it’s important to reach out to others whilst grieving because they can bring a better perspective and offer support. Sometimes you just want someone to be there without needing to talk and offer support. Some people have felt the need to self harm or become self destructive. Isolation can set in and take your mind to dark places. Having someone to check on you and talk with you can counter what Satan has been saying to you. His main purpose is to steal, kill and destroy, so if he can get you alone in an isolated state you’re vulnerable to his attacks. We need God and other Christians to lean on in dark times of grief. I’m still grieving. It’s been 5 months since my nephew was killed and its an uphill battle. I do have support and am taking each day at a time to find peace and hope again. It’s a process for sure.
