To determined the message, we must understand who John wrote this for. He had written this for a specific group of people at a specific time and place. To place the book in this context alters what I have been taught that Revelations means. Without this historical context, it is very easy to misinterpret the book. However, this book does applies to us today as much as it did to those it was originally written for.

John wrote Revelations to a specific group of people (the seven churches), living in a particular geographic area (Asia Minor) and living during a particular time period undertake control of the Romans. All these factors determine how the message is framed and the manner in which the message is expressed. Without the historical context, we could easily misinterpret the intent and the message by using today’s context.

Given that history tells what situations our ancestors were put in, and helps us apply historical lessons to our present days somehow, by understanding Revelation’s historical context, we can experience the presence of God as well as what first-century Christians lived up to.

You need to understand the context in which the book is written and why, and to whom.
According to the video, Revelation was written to 1st century Christians under the rule of Rome.
