It is helpful to know John’s purpose and the context in which it would have been understood. Knowing that the first readers would have seen the imagery symbolizing things in their world makes it more approachable. Recognizing and understanding this dynamic can help make sense of what is written, as well as help guard against misinterpreting the text.
Learning more about the historical context helps me place it more in line with other Scriptures.

So that the context of who and when it was written is applied to our understanding of what John is revealing to us, where we may then associate and apply these truths of God’s sovereignty to our own situations and circumstances that we face in our own time.

Need to understand the current historical/political environment of the time John wrote the letter/book. I had not looked at Revelation as being historical until now.

As with any book in the Bible the context helps us to understand what was happening in the time of writing to better understand who the author was writing and the message he is trying to portray…..

Understanding the historical context is important because it reveals the purpose of the letter and how the recipients would understand it. My understanding of the book has changed in light of viewing it through the eyes of the original readers.
