True prayer is about more than just the words uttered. It is also about our heart, and the demonstration of total dependence on God. Jesus said in Matthew 6:8 that God already knows what we intend to share with Him before it even comes out of our mouths. While we struggle with making the time, immediate obligations, and other pressures God in His omniscience is lovingly reading each of our hearts and waiting for us to simply release our requests into His hands. God will always receive our prayer with love, Jesus advocates for our plea, and the Holy Spirit intercedes on our behalf. With a time like that with us, we need never be concerned about the words we pray.

Furthermore, the impact of true prayer goes far beyond the limited scope of words. God uses our prayers to shape the course of history. We may never know how the brief prayer lifted while driving past mangled cars and ambulances, or how the plea for protection in the dark, eery moments of a vicious storm, or the intercessory prayer for a dear friend influence not only the moment, but also the future of so many moments– and for generations of people.

Finally, true prayer may also be about the words. But not just any words, His Word! When we simply don’t possess the words to express the depth of our despair, or the immediacy of the need, or urgency of the crisis we face, God’s Word does! We need never fear about adequately praying about…anything. Open the Bible to our favorite prayer, or to Psalms 23 or 51. Lift these words to the heart of God.

God hears. He cares. He answers.

Prayer is about establishing a relationship with God; we can talk to Him and listen to Him. We don’t have to even speak coherently because “the Holy Spirit intercedes for us with wordless groans.” God receives our prayers and collects them whether in the form physical posture, praying back His word, or just speaking from the heart .

Because God wants us to spend time talking to Him in a relationship.
