Why was the book of Lamentations given that title? In what way does this express a realistic view of life?

By Jeremiah’s lamenting he continually asks the people to return to their God but often they don’t hear him. Even this day, the pastors and preachers and God’s word call us and we don’t listen, or we listen but don’t react. We’re non-participators or we push it into the future. So we have to be told over and over. We are captive to sin but we must fight and return to God.

The book is given the name Lamentations because it describes Jeremiah’s sorrow for the destruction of Jerusalem and the captivity of the Israelites due to their disobedience to God.

Jeremiah laments over the people’s disobedience. This is a realistic view of life because we all sin and fail. We watch ourselves fail and we watch others fail. We lament and weep over the sins in this world just as Jeremiah did many years ago.

“Lamentations” refers to the prophet Jeremiah, who was “lamenting”, or mourning, the destruction of Jerusalem and capture of the Jews at the hands of the Babylonians. This expresses a realistic view of life in that we will have moments where we will feel sorrowful when something terrible happens to us, which can be washed away if we pray and ask God for salvation.
