Why would a lack of knowledge of the Old Testament weaken our understanding of the New Testament?

The Old Testament shows again and again that people cannot make themselves acceptable to God on their own. Over and over the people of Israel fail to follow God’s commandments, and God keeps bestowing His love on them. Without this understanding that we are not enough on our own, we would not understand fully how much God wants to redeem us and why Christ’s sacrifice was required.

Jumping into the new testament without knowledge of the old testament would be like jumping into part two of your favorite movie series. Yes we can enjoy everything in the New Testament without first reading the Old Testament, but learning about everything leading up to Jesus and the early church in the New Testament gives me a much better appreciation for the history in the Old Testament and the Biblical narrative.

The Old Testament is an integral part of our faith. It shows God’s redemptive heart and process, and is constantly showing us pictures of Jesus through people, stories, and rhetoric.
