There are many times in the New Testament that the writer refers back to the Old Testament writings. The jewish people of the time when the New Testament was written were very familiar with the Old Testament and the language traditions and cultural norms. To understand the New Testament fully we need to have a firm grasp on the Old Testament and the culture of the time in which it was written.
