Because it is the foundational history that must be understood in order for mankind’s reconciliation through Jesus unto God. It’s like our spiritual birth.

I think if we only look at the New Testament, we wouldn’t understand that the plan of God for salvation began from the Old. We wouldn’t understand that Jesus was a fulfilment of the promises made long ago. In that way we wouldn’t understand the heart of God completely.

Lacking knowledge of the Old Testament leaves us with an incomplete picture of the New Testament, especially regarding the Messiah it so beautifully prophesies. It would also leave us with a weakened understanding of who we are before God, and why we need a Savior.

The story of the greatest sacrifice the world has ever seen only makes sense if you know the rituals the jewish people had to go through in sacrificing their animals to God. NO clear knowledge of knowing how we came to be or who created us makes the new testament just another story. There are so many reasons but we get to know our creator, when he created and the design he had in mind for us all along.

One of the reason is that so many passages of the Old Testament are quoted in the New Testament. If you don’t have a decent knowledge of the Old Testament then there may be parts of the New Testament you may not understand as well.
