The Old Testament is the foundation of the New Testament. Without understanding the beginning, it would be hard to completely understand the ending.

The Old Testament is a fore shadow of the New Testament. There are over 60 prophecies of Jesus in the Old Testament. There are numerous quotes from the Old Testament in the New Testament and if you don’t understand the old the new will not make sense (give a clear understanding). I know that the Old Testament can be confusing; that is why we have commentaries to help us understand. Don’t just look in one, look in multiple commentaries, ask your pastor, discuss in a group study. Ask “Why”, “How”, “Who”, “I don’t understand”. And don’t forget to Pray.

If you don’t read and have some understanding about the Old Testament then reading the New Testament does not make sense. A good example of this is the First mention of Melchizedek in the Old Testament (Genesis 14:18-20) and the Second mention in Hebrews Chapter 7–Without reading the Old Testament the reader will no doubt wonder who Paul is talking about and why he is important.
