Because the Old Testament is the foundation background of the New Testament. The Old Testament gives prophecy of the Messiah and the New Testament is the fulfilment of the prophecies.

Jesus was sent to save mankind/humankind from an eternal hell. In addition to teaching us the character of God, the Old Testament books provide us examples of life and human behavior. We see in the OT the need for a Savior. In this way, the OT sets the stage for Jesus Christ.
