Understanding the “why” of the New Testament, through the Old Testament, helps us understand the lesson, the story, the messages being presented in the New Testament.

The entire story and ministry of Jesus is built on the foundation of the OT. Jesus affirms and confirms the OT. Paul and the other authors of the NT built their principles on the history of the OT, so lacking understanding of the OT is a detriment for understanding the NT.

It’s like reading a book or watching a movie in the middle and things are happening and you have no context of what brought about the events. The Old Testament is like the precursor to the New Testament. Without the Old Testament, you would be lost and asking questions.

The Old Testament shows us the original sin (Adam) and sets the stage for reconciling us to the one who took on our sin (Jesus).

Without reading the Old Testament we have a limited knowledge as to why Jesus came.
