Why would a lack of knowledge of the Old Testament weaken our understanding of the New Testament?

The New Testament is the built upon the foundation of the Old Testament. Without the knowledge of the prophecies and promises from the Old Testament, we cannot understand the gifts that are received in the New Testament.
