Why would a lack of knowledge of the Old Testament weaken our understanding of the New Testament?

Because the Old Testament is the foundational backdrop for the New Testament.

A lack of Knowledge of the Old Testament will weaken our understanding of the New Testament because the Old Testament has so many prophecies of Jesus and characteristics of God that we don’t know without the Old Testament.

It would be like reading the ending to a book without knowing the full story!
The New Testament is only part of what we know about God. The Old Testament is the foundation -
Without a clear understanding of who God is and his overarching story of bringing Jesus (the Savior) to the world, we miss the point of the New Testament. We miss why we need a savior. We miss that God has had a plan from the beginning of time to redeem his creation back to himself.
