We need to understand the need for a Saviour. To know that all have sinned since the very beginning. And despite the constant disobedience and rejection of God in the Old Testament, there is a way to redemption. This is promised throughout the Old and is realised in the New Testament.

Without knowledge of the Old Testament one would miss the foundation of the New Testament. You would miss the prophesies and promises that are fulfilled in the New Testament. You would miss the thread of Jesus Christ that is interwoven throughout all history.

All throughout the New Testament there are many quotes, mentions of the Old Testament, prophecies from the Old Testament are fulfilled in the New Testament. Jesus quotes the Old Testament, plus the history of the Israelites is in the OT. There is a red thread – Jesus – that runs through the OT.

Because we need to know the old and how it relates to the new. You need a comparison of what life was like before Jesus came and sacrificed His life so that we can have eternal life with Him.

The OT tells us of the reason Jesus Christ had been sent here which was die for our sins allowing us to the opportunity at eternal life. Without the OT, Christ’s death wouldn’t have the significance for us as it does. Honestly, it probably wouldn’t mean anything to anyone except for his family. It also shows us the depth of God’s love for us and what he is willing to do because he wants us to have eternal life with him.
